This has been confirmed by a team of researchers from CIBEROBN, affiliated with the University of Navarra and the University of Reus, who found an 18% relative reduction in heart attacks for each additional half tablespoon of olive oil consumed, independent of other factors.  

It prevents arrhythmia. Research published in the journal Circulation indicates that following a Mediterranean diet accompanied by extra virgin olive oil helps prevent atrial fibrillation, the most common cardiac arrhythmia.

According to the America Heart Association (AHA), consuming olive oil reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by 15% and coronary heart disease by 21%. Half a teaspoon a day is enough to kick in its protective effects.
